Understanding EU Firearms Directive 2021/555: What Owners Need to Know

The updated EU Firearms Directive introduces new requirements for storage, transport, and online trading. Here is what every licensed firearm owner should understand.

Directive (EU) 2021/555 is the recast of the 1991 EU Firearms Directive. It consolidates a decade of amendments and updates the rules that govern the acquisition, possession, transfer, storage, and online trading of firearms across the European Union.

The Big Picture

The Directive harmonises minimum standards while leaving member states freedom to go further. Its goals are to prevent the diversion of legal firearms into illegal markets and to strengthen traceability through better record-keeping and marking.

Storage and Secure Conditions

Article requirements on secure storage require licensed holders to keep firearms in conditions that prevent unauthorised access. National implementing laws decide the details — such as certified cabinets — but the trend across the EU is clearly toward documented, verifiable secure storage rather than a simple lock.

Transport and the European Firearms Pass

Travelling with a firearm within the EU relies on the European Firearms Pass, issued by the country of residence. Different rules apply to hunters, sport shooters, and collectors, and to the timeframes within which the pass must be validated by destination states.

Online Trading of Firearms

One of the most important updates concerns the digital sale of firearms. Online platforms that intermediate firearm sales must verify that the parties are licensed and that the transaction is conducted in compliance with the law — effectively making marketplaces part of the compliance chain.

BGUN is built with this in mind: verification of sellers, compliance-aware listing rules, and lawful handling of data relating to licences and transactions.

The Directive's direction is consistent: more traceability, better storage standards, and stronger verification of everyone involved in the firearms trade.

What You Should Do

  • Check your national storage rules and upgrade to a certified, documented cabinet if required.
  • Keep your European Firearms Pass and licence documentation up to date.
  • Verify that any online marketplace you use performs the compliance checks the Directive expects.
  • Record your firearms — marking and register requirements are tightening.
